Did you miss them?
Yes, the links of been absent for about three or four weeks now. Sorry about that. It’s not that I haven’t been reading. In fact, I have a whole list of things bookmarked and I’ve discovered some wonderful new food blogs in recent weeks. It’s just been that by the time the weekend rolls around, the opportunity to sit down and write a post including them fades.

On Twitter the other day I wrote that I’m feeling a bit overwhelmed. Anyone else in that boat? This isn’t necessarily a negative thing, but all my thoughts and actions have drifted outdoors. I’m loving the weather and our new yard, however, between the half marathon, lawn mowing, prepping a garden and making our way through the final boxes still left in the garage there is always something to do. Computer time is work time and if I’m not working, I want to be outside.

But after getting the yard mowed last night and taking a beautiful run near the horse farms this morning, I am enjoying a little down time this afternoon. I thought some great links were in order!
Spring Chicken and Asparagus Soup from Fresh Slowcooking. Asparagus is all over the place this time of year and while it has taken me a while to come around I actually kind of like it now. (It has been my least favorite vegetable in previous years.) I like that this recipe is different than the usual grilled and steamed version that is so common.
Window Farming: A Do-It-Yourself Veggie Venture from NPR. If you feel space is a barrier to growing some of your own produce definitely check this out!
You Are What You Eat is a photo essay by Mark Menjivar. It is composed of several photos of the inside of refrigerators from people with different backgrounds, jobs, and eating styles. Such a simple thing, but so educational and fascinating.
Making a Foreign Staple Work Back Home from the NYTimes is an entertaining article that anyone who has ever traveled to experience culture and food can relate to.
Taste of Beirut is a food blog I just discovered and it has quickly topped my list. Since we haven’t traveled for a few months now, something that feels so odd after years living abroad, I feel my motivation to cook cultural food waning a bit. It’s blogs like these that remind me why I love to cook and travel. I’m also very excited that a family friend who cuts my hair back in my hometown has her Lebanese mother-in-law living with her. They have invited me to come and learn how to make some traditional dishes sometime this summer. I’ll keep you posted!

I’m looking out the window at a very dreary, rainy afternoon. It may have ruined plans for a walk, but I can’t help being happy to see the drizzle. Why? Well, because if you look closely you can actually see the landscape getting greener by the minute. It is amazing what a little (almost) spring rain can do.

These changes remind me of why I love living in this part of the US. – the four distinct seasons we experience. I’m always excited for what the next part of the year has to offer.

This great weekend started on Friday when we finally got our couch! I’m so happy with it. After not having a comfortable one for 3 years (Brazil just doesn’t offer the same types of couches we use here in the U.S.), and then being without one completely for the last six months, I really just want to curl up on it all day long. Although, I’m not sure who loves it more, me or the pug. I had no idea the pillows would be the perfect pug size when we ordered it.

Despite the rain today, it has been an excellent weekend around here. Yesterday I attended a Farm to Table: Diversity in Ag mini-conference in our county. I learned about worm composting and growing herbs, both of which will result in posts later this spring and summer. I also had a delicious lunch of local foods which I’ll talk more about this week.

To top off all those happenings, I ran 10 miles yesterday! And, no. I have no idea how I did it! It is by far the furthest I’ve ever run, and now I finally feel ready for the half marathon in two weeks.

How was your weekend? Is spring peaking out where you are?

I didn’t get a links post up last weekend so some of these are from the past couple of weeks. I think you will enjoy them.

The Theme Is…Peanut Butter! is the ultimate peanut butter recipe round-up from Tasty Kitchen at The Pioneer Woman. I know most of the food blogging world reads this blog, but I couldn’t pass up sharing this fabulous post. If you like peanut butter even the tiniest bit you will want to check this out. From sweet to savory to spicy, the selection is unbelievable!

Real Food Face-Off has been a weekly feature at Kitchen Stewardship the past few weeks. It features a Q & A with several real-food-advocating authors and bloggers. I’ve really enjoyed reading about all the views, practices and opinions and especially like this one I’ve linked to here.

EatingRD provided us with a very well researched post about maca. I’ve been seeing the powder mentioned on several blogs around the web. If you are interested in learning more about it check out this post.

What IS “Healthy” Food? from Food Sleuth answers this question from a real, nourishing food perspective. I have to say, I’m a big fan of the answers provided.

Abundant Mangoes from Sense and Serendipity put a big smile on my face and had me day dreaming of more tropical climates. If you want to see some of the beautiful fruit nature has to offer, and perhaps get a wee bit jealous of this mango bounty, head over and take a look.

I also recently posted Advice from an Expat Who Hadn’t Planned to Be One at The 3 Star Traveler. If you want to know a little more about me and my ex-pat experience I welcome you to take a look.

It’s a big weekend around here. Believe it or not, we are finally moving! I honestly didn’t think the time would ever get here. We’ve been hit with delays right and left, but it looks like I may finally have a fantastic (and big) kitchen to cook in and a designated office to write in! We should have the appliances in soon and I’ll be sure to share some pictures.

On top of that, tomorrow is my husband’s birthday. It won’t be a typical celebration considering we have to scrub the apartment down and hand over the keys by 4:30, not to mention no oven for baking a cake, but I’ll find some way to make it special. It seems I’m the one with all the gifts, though. He returned Wednesday from a business trip to Brazil and brought back all kinds of fun stuff.

I’ll highlight some of the coffees in a later post, but here is what was in my goodie bag: specialty coffee from my favorite coffee shop in Curitiba along with some Café do Ponto, some Café do Ponto chocolate truffle powder for coffee, goiaba (guava) jam, mascavo sugar and demerara sugar. Non-food items included some new Havaianas, and a friend from there sent me a super cute dish towel. Fortunate, I am.

Despite all that is going on, I just couldn’t leave you without any links two weeks in a row. There is so much great stuff I’ve come across recently. I hope you enjoy!

Is Local Food Better? from World Watch isn’t a post or article from this week, but I found it while searching for references for an article recently. This contains information I’ve heard bits and pieces of, but it is nice to have it all put together to more fully answer the question. If you have questions about transporting food and how that effects the environment, you should read this.

Coconut Cilantro Rice from The Dabble sounds so great. I’ve had coconut rice before, but I haven’t made my own. I’m looking forward to trying this recipe.

Curried brown rice pilaf with pistachios and cherries from Fabulous Food Finds has way too many good things in it. This is something I may consider for our Easter table.

The Benefits of Bulgur from the NYTimes.com Well Blog had me happy that bulgur was one of the ingredients in the Pantry Veggie Burgers I made this week.

From Grass to Cheese: The Nolan Family Farm was posted on Farm Stories. This video tells the story of a family, grass-based cheese operation. It is also part of a KickStart project where the public can financially support it. The video is definitely worth a watch. I find family farms so fascinating and love that we as consumers are being given more opportunities to support them.

I’m doing exactly what I love to do this weekend – traveling. A short trip, but it feels like I haven’t been away from home in a very long time so I’m really looking forward to a change of scenery. We are headed to Indiana for Purdue basketball game tonight and we’ll be squeezing in as many stops as possible at some great restaurants in the area.
What are your plans for the weekend? Celebrating Valentine’s Day, Chinese New Year or Carnaval?
Here are some of my favorite reads from the week. Hope you enjoy them as much as I did!
Don’t (White) Sugar-Coat It has teamed up with some other food bloggers to host The Super Breakfast Bowl Challenge. Each week readers are challenged to incorporate a different ingredient into their breakfast and submit posts. This week was avocado, next week is flaxseed.
Holly Hickman is a journalist and author I’ve just recently been introduced to. The post Don’t Soak Your Nuts, Boys really caught my attention this week and not just because of the title. Soaking nuts and grains is a popular practice, and as it turns out a bit of a debated topic when you take a look at the science.
Striving Bean shared a recipe for Dark Chocolate Cookies made with beans! I’ve had black bean brownies before, but not cookies. It looks like a great recipe to try!
Rawmazing was featured on some of the foodie photo sites this week with Raw Cinnamon Buns. They look so good! I obviously don’t eat all raw foods, but I’m certainly not opposed to them. I had some pretty outstanding raw cheesecake in San Francisco and I have feeling these buns won’t disappoint either.
The Matador Network did a post featuring Matador Pets this week. I loved seeing all the photos and locations of the pets. I especially like the goat. Oh, and Macy is in there too!

I’m looking at having a logo created for my blog. If you happen to know of a person or company that does good work please drop me a recommendation in the comments.

Photo: A new cupcake place opened in town last weekend. This chocolate cupcake with chocolate buttercream tasted as good as it looks!

This first week of February flew by! I was able to do some cooking and baking which, of course, makes me happy. Otherwise I’m staying busy with writing and that makes me happy too.
I don’t know about you, but my head is swimming with game food and Valentine’s Day recipes. We might be going to a party for the big game, which means not much cooking creativity for me, but the Valentine’s baking will be a different story. I’ve still got some chocolate cravings left even after yesterday’s brownies!
I missed last week’s installment of links so I’ve got several for you this time around. Maybe good news for everyone snowed in who could use some extra reading material.
Gonna Want Seconds had me intrigued with Mama’s Old Fashioned Chili. It has both dark beer and coffee in it!
Target announced last week that it will be eliminating farmed salmon from its stores. A good read as I continue my quest to learn more about sustainable fish and seafood.
When Chocolate and Chakras Collide was an article on NYTimes.com. It’s all about a relaxing yoga class followed by delicious food!
A Little Bit of Spain in Iowa had a great post on Real Fat that touched on the topic of self-love. I too, am becoming a fan of real, natural fat from animal sources. It’s a lot about going back to your roots and nutrition for me.
The Art of Non-Conformity had an excellent post last week about What You Don’t Do Doesn’t Matter. It will remind you to do, instead of think and wish.
The Road Forks shared their day with the elephants with some fabulous photos. This was the same farm, Patara Elephant Farm, which my husband and I visited to during our Southeast Asia trip so it brought back great memories.
Photo of a belated Christmas gift from a friend. Pug mug.

My Saturday got off to a great start. This morning my husband took me out to the course he runs on Saturday mornings with coworkers. The beautiful fog hanging over all the horse farms made my five mile long run go by pretty quickly. A few of the horses ran to me when I went by. Funny how they have such playful personalities.
It was a nice change from the treadmill and fortunately it wasn’t raining this morning. How has the weather been where you are? We’ve had several days of gloomy rain. The warmer temperatures are pleasant, but I still wouldn’t mind some pretty white snow. I haven’t had my fill yet.

I came across so many great recipes this week as well as inspiring stories and some more info on sugar. I hope you enjoy them as much as I did!

Have a great weekend!
A Nutritionist Eats shared a recipe for Lentils with Curried Tarka. Lentils, curry and coconut milk, what’s not to love? This is just the kind of meal I like to have for lunch paired with some rice or flatbread.
Some Ones Cooking caught my interest with a recipe for Chicken Artichoke Rice Casserole. I really enjoy artichoke hearts, but don’t know many ways to use them other than in or with dip. This sounds like a great recipe and I especially like that there is a recipe for the white sauce as opposed to only giving the option of using canned cream soup.
Whisk: A Food Blog has had a waffle theme recently and the post featuring Hard Waffles got my attention. It is a hand-me-down recipe and she’s interested in knowing if anyone has a similar recipe for them or knows the tradition of how they are enjoyed.
Daily Bread Journal shared a beautiful story about her parents along with a reminder that we need to take time to slow down and enjoy the sites and people around us.

Small Footprint Family provided an informative post entitled Just a Spoonful of Sugar to add to our collection of sugar knowledge this week. If you aren’t yet tired of reading about the sweet stuff yet head over and check it out.

January 16, 2010

Hello, hello! How is January treating you? It has been a great week around here. Not only did it warm up a bit and I got a great new writing assignment, but…
We got the house!!!

New kitchen and plenty of natural light for photos coming soon.

This weekend, we have our very first visitors since being back in the States and I’m really excited. It feels as if I haven’t hosted in forever. My parents are coming to visit. I’ll be away from the computer for most of the weekend, but back to it next week.
Until then, here are a few of my favorite reads from the week.
Spinach and Coconut Soup from When I’m Bored I Make Soup was a post from this past summer, but someone sent it around on Twitter this week so it’s new to me. After being in Brazil I find that coconut milk is a staple in the kitchen and I love finding new recipes for using it.
Healthful-living experts share their New Year’s resolutions was an article on the Washington Post. My favorites were to love eating more and say grace before meals.
Sticking to Diets Is About More Than Willpower was a research report on Science Daily. Like many health advocates, I don’t like the word diet, but this is an interesting read about how the perceived complexity of an eating plan can influence weight loss success.
Three Travel Secrets was The Backpack Foodie’s addition to a game of post tag going around travel blogs. I liked this one because it talks about the safety of local food and how communication goes beyond language.
I was also tagged in this game and you can take a look at my Three Best Kept Travel Secrets if you are interested.
Enjoy your weekend!

What a fast weekend! I can’t believe it is already Sunday evening. What a great week though! Despite the fact that I simply can’t get warm, two years without a true winter has me jumping for joy with the snow we’ve gotten around here. Kentucky can be hit or miss when it comes to a snowy winter, but with three or four inches on the ground and relatively clear roads we are enjoying some beautiful winter scenery. We even went out for a drive yesterday and saw a few buffalo braving the cold. (I know they look like they could be just about anything, but I promise, they are buffalo.)

All day yesterday was spent house shopping. We found one we liked, but we’ll just have to see how things progress. However, I will say the kitchen was beautiful! The most important part of the house, of course. Then to top off the excitement we picked up our first order of pork, beef, chicken and eggs from a local farm. Pike Valley Farm produces grassfed/pastured/natural foods. I can’t wait to share more about it in a later post, maybe this spring.

Today I continued my journey on the half marathon training path getting in four miles on the treadmill this afternoon. I haven’t braved the cold yet, but I will have to once the race gets closer. I do have my hopes up that it will at least be in the 40s by the end of March for the actual event. I figure no reason to get acclimated to zero if I don’t have to!

Below are a few of the things I enjoyed reading this week. How was your week?

Agriculture Society shared the post Proof that Real Food Doesn’t Have to Cost a Bundle. A great read that outlines the cost of meals made with real, naturally produced foods. I love reading posts like this. Like everyone else, I get caught up in feeling that we can’t afford to eat this way, but the truth is we can. We just have to adjust our budget, our views and perhaps sacrifice a few minor things, but it’s definitely worth it.

Safety of Beef Processing Method Is Questioned was an article last week from NYtimes.com and likely something you don’t want to read while you are eating. It may turn your stomach a bit, but it is an eye opening read and it makes me incredibly happy that I just bought 4 lbs or ground beef from a local farmer!

Kiss My Spatula posted some gorgeous Homemade Goat Cheese. It made me want to run out and buy some milk or perhaps even my own dairy goat!

Is the fat acceptance movement bad for our health? was a thought provoking article on CNN.com. I would love to hear your opinion.

The Dabble had a great recap post of a recent trip to Purdue University’s campus including eats and drinks. My husband and I are both alumni and are headed back up for a basketball game in February. We are really excited to visit some old favorites. You’ll also love the Chocolate Torte Cake recipe in the post!

On Go Galavanting I posted about a cool little bed and breakfast in Colorado called the Fresh and Wyld Inn offering SOUL food cooking classes (sustainable, organic, unprocessed and local).

If you still want to learn more about Antigua, I posted more about my non-food experiences on The 3 Star Traveler.

Making one of my first attempts to stick with my New Year’s commitments, I made the Mushroom Barley Soup from Two Peas and Their Pod this week. It was delicious!

Happy 2010!

Even though I didn’t get up many posts this week, I did do some reading and I couldn’t let the first weekend of a new decade go by without putting up a links post. Not to mention the fact that it is 01022010. The date today is the same whether you read it forward or backward. Thanks to Twitter for that fun fact.
I’m usually not one to go on too much about the gifts I received for Christmas, but I got some really exciting foodie stuff this year and I just have to share my excitement with you. My family went overboard for Christmas. I got a jumbo muffin pan (perfect for mini-meatloaves), a silicone baking mat, a basil plant, a crockpot cookbook and a 1lb bag of pecans (my Mom’s great with the food gifts). I also got a candy thermometer which has me already planning out what I’m going to make for Valentine’s Day.
To top it off I got a book I’ve been wanting for a while now, 1001 Foods You Must Taste Before You Die. It lists fruits, veggies, fish, meats and cheeses from all over the world. It is so fun to go through and see what I’ve already tried during our travels. There is a lot more out there to explore!

Since I was traveling during my birthday in October I also got two belated birthday gifts from my brothers. A new waffle maker perfect for weekend breakfasts and a tortilla press. I can’t wait to start making our tortillas from scratch!
Okay, enough about me. Here are a few of my favorite reads from the week.
Top 20 worst food trends of the decade from the Denver Food Blog will give you a good laugh. Hopefully no sensitive foodies out there will be offended!
Got Passport asks Are YOU part of the problem? This is a very straightforward post that will lead to evaluate your efforts to better your health and the environment. I made me give some thought to those times that I give excuses.
Heaven & Earth Farm seeks apprentices according to a post on the Sustainable Food Jobs blog. I just had to pass this one on. It sounds like such an amazing opportunity.

How was your week? I have to say mine was pretty good. However, I have a feeling next week will be even better. As you read this we are on our way to Antigua! This is our yearly vacation to the Caribbean that we’ve managed to fit in since our honeymoon six years ago. I call this one a vacation and not a trip because we really relax and do a good dose of nothing for the week. It’s wonderful!
This is our first trip to Antigua so I am incredibly excited to see a new place and explore a little in between the relaxing. We’ve hired a driver for one day who is going to show us around the island and get us some local food so keep your eyes out for a post after the New Year. I also have a few recipes going up next week while I’m gone.

Reading this week was outstanding. I have been bookmarking articles, posts and recipes left and right. I hope you enjoy them!

eatingRD shared a post about a recent trip to Fort Collins and with it a recipe for Pistachio Coucous Patties. I know, the name alone has you intrigued. I was! They remind me a bit of a falafel and I can’t wait to try to them myself.
Lesley Lifting Life did a great review for a local joint near her called Local Burger. This place looks incredible! You can check out her post to learn more, but they serve all kinds of meats (and veggie options) with a traceable source along with organic, gluten free and vegan sides. I’d love to have a place like this in my area!
A Good Appetite shared an extensive list of their favorite cookbooks. Coming from such great cooks I was thrilled to have these recommendations. So if you need a last minute gift idea head on over and check them out.
Esquire magazine listed a slide show of the 59 Best Breakfast Places in America. I’m both hungry now and ready to jump in the car for a foodie road trip! Who’s coming with me?
No Meat Athlete (and his lovely wife) shared a crafty idea for dried fruit ornaments. These are just beautiful and the post will take you through the steps to make them yourself.
Eat Me Daily is inviting everyone to submit their best Guy Fieri Gingerbread man. I love his shows on the Food Network especially Diners, Drive-ins and Dives. I may try out my own creation when I make gingerbread in a few days.
I want to send a big Thank You to The Daily Dose for giving me the Superior Scribbler Award. I greatly appreciate it!

Also, one last link. I’m finally starting to get rolling with my travel blog, The 3 Star Traveler. This is the blog I have transitioned to after moving on from my ex-pat blog, Blondie in Brazil. This week I posted my 3 best kept travel secrets!
