I hope things are well where ever you may be this Saturday!
I have had a really great week. Thanks for such a positive response to Mango Week and I’m looking forward to all your great mango recipes.
I’ve been asked if the badge can be used to share the recipe challenge on your own blog and the answer is – absolutely! I appreciate anything you do to invite others to participate.
I came across so many great articles and posts this week that cover topics from gardening to travel to content theft. The food and health web-world was overflowing with informative stuff!
The Nutrition Data Blog posted an article about What Growing Your Own Food Can Do for You. Yet another reason to garden in any way you can. I also read the blog Gardner to Farmer which was mentioned in this post. It provides a wealth of helpful info for those who are looking to get started.
Veggie Trader is a site I found through Twitter this week. You can use the site to trade, buy or sell produce with other growers in your area. Such a great idea! You can get rid of the some of the extras you might have and also get your hands on a variety of veggies you may not be able to grow yourself.
Food Lovers Like Me took a trip to Panama and shared her experiences with us this week through pictures. The fish and corn soup with guava punch look amazing!
Bitchin’ Avocado is a blog written by Allen who also blogs at Eating Out Loud. This week he provided a very helpful post about How to Trace What’s Copied from Your Blog. He spreads the word about a content tracer he’s used to track who copies text and pictures from his food blogs. Very interesting stuff!

Links to a Healthy Weekend: Happy Easter!!

April 11, 2009

Given how much I love Easter, this is a very happy Saturday for me! I was able to do some reading this week and this is what I found well worth sharing. Wherever you are and whatever holidays you celebrate I hope you have a blessed and beautiful weekend!
Low-fat yogurt: why bother? is a post by Eric Burkett, Food Examiner. He reviewed several of the additives in low-fat yogurt which I was aware of, but still found his post very informative. I started exploring fuller fat yogurts after reading The Fat Fallacy by Will Clower. I have to say I really don’t enjoy the fat free, sugar free versions any longer.
Every Kitchen Table featured a post about Unsustainable food. After reading Omnivore’s Dilemma this topic has really consumed me. I find myself craving more and more information so I can increase my knowledge as a consumer and health advocate.
Selby’s Food Corner showed off some of the most adorable Easter cupcakes I have seen. It is amazing what she can do with fondant!
Eating Out Loud shared about using natural dyes to decorate Easter eggs. I loved this! I’m always looking for more ways to create color without using artificial food coloring. A great way to have a more natural Easter. Now, what do about all that candy? Have to say I’m leaning towards enjoying in moderation because I am craving some jelly beans!

April 4, 2009

Happy Saturday! I hope it is a beautiful day wherever you are. The sun is shining bright here and the temperature is supposed to get near 90 F this weekend. Not exactly fall here yet, but I have my fingers crossed that soon we will have some cooler weather and it will stick around.

Here are a few things I found this week that I just had to pass on. One of them isn’t so positive, but is definitely worth mentioning. It will make you want to work even harder at spreading the word about healthy living.
See you next week!

Food Renegade had an inspiring interview with Nina Planck author of Real Food: What to Eat and Why. I especially liked reading the part about her journey from meat eater to vegan and then to a consumer of a natural diet incorporating animal products again. I haven’t read her book yet, but I will the first chance I get.

31 Flavors? Think outside the carton, homemade ice cream lovers was an article by David Lebovitz in the LA Times this week. His ideas really got the wheels turning in my head regarding homemade ice cream creativity. I loved the idea of using Greek yogurt.
My Year Without Sugar posted a recipe for Curry Squash Soup with some unique ingredients like spelt flour and apple juice. One thing that I’ve really enjoyed regarding produce selection in Brazil is that squash and pumpkin are year round foods here. I like being able to take advantage of the great flavors more than two months a year.
Here’s the not-so-positive one. The Fight for Fitness posted about the Fifth Third Burger that has popped up into the news recently. I think it is safe to say that most of us are disgusted by this. I mean, everything in moderation if you want an appropriately portioned burger, have it. I just don’t understand the need for people to come up with massive portions to prove the point that they can contradict healthy living.

I guess they just need a big pat on the back and a “good for you”. Unfortunately for them it is really quite easy to be unhealthy in our society so they aren’t proving much of anything. Eating real food that tastes good and is good for you is something worth being proud of.

March 29, 2009

Whoa! Is it seriously the last weekend of March? It simply doesn’t seem possible.
This week has not been without frustration for me. Our Internet service here has been a bit of a battle since day one. It had been doing well for the past few months and within the past week we have had more problems than I can count. After losing for two days solid a couple weeks ago, it then worked for about a week. It went out for another day, was repaired and it has been on, off, on, off for hours at a time since.
We had another man out last night to repair it and we hope it will be good for a while, but I have to admit I just keep waiting for a page not to load and the lights to be blinking randomly on the modem.
I am a big fan of a break from screen time, but very much enjoy it when it is a voluntary break and not a forced one. I feel like I’m trying to play catch up with work every time service returns and since the web is my access to phone I had to miss an important conference call regarding a book I’m coauthoring with an organization I blog for.
So this explains why the links are late this week and why you probably haven’t seen me commenting around your blogs. Fortunately I was able to find several great links early this week when things were still running smoothly. Here’s hoping for a better week coming up!
I hope you’ve had a wonderful weekend!

food for living had a recipe for S’mores Oatmeal. What a great idea! I’d probably leave out the energy bar to lower calories and try to find the most natural graham cracker I could, but this is a great oats idea.

use real butter had a recipe for Sticky Toffee Pudding. This is one of those desserts I’ve always wanted to try, but haven’t been in the right place at the right time. This one looks delicious!

Everyday Cookin’ showed off some fabulous looking Crispy Fish Tacos. I’m sure they taste as good as they look. I can’t wait to give them a try!

Pizza-making machine has Italian chefs in a spin was an article on Yahoo News. This had to be the week’s most interesting read. I really think the chefs need not worry. I can’t imagine a vending machine being able to compete with the food in Italian restaurants. Although I’m headed to Italy this summer and I’ll definitely be taking a picture if I come across one.

In case you missed it Michelle who formerly blogged at What Does Your Body Good? has launched a beautiful, brand new site along with her exciting new business – Find Your Balance Health Counseling & Yoga. She’s giving away a Kripalu Cookbook of gourmet vegetarian recipes to celebrate so go check it out!

************************************

Okay, as if that isn’t enough wonderful links for this weekend, here come some more. This was one of those weeks where I found myself bookmarking page after page of good stuff. I had to narrow it down a bit to keep from making your read on all day, but here you go!

Rebecca’s everyday foods had a unique recipe for Peach Biscuit Soup. I’d never seen anything quite like it and it sounds delicious.

The plans for the White House organic garden were released in a New York Times article this week. Such an exciting project and there is all kinds of cool stuff on the planting list.

Compost and Its Rewards on The Epi-Log was a great review and personal account about using an indoor composter.

Two Peas and Their Pod featured a recipe for Snickerdoodle Blondies this week. I don’t think I need to say anymore about that winning combination. Yum!

Contests and Giveaways:

Savor the Thyme has the cutest contest going with her challenge for foodies to use Peeps as the inspiration for some culinary creations.

Diet, Dessert and Dogs is showing off her brand new site design (great!) and giving away the organic maple syrup she reviewed this week.

March 14, 2009

So, during the first part of this week, I thought it was a slow one. Then, bam! It was over. The days flew by for some reason, I suspect because like most others, I had a lot to do. I’m feeling that good, caught-up feeling this weekend and I’m planning to spend some time away from the screen. I find I really need that every now and then. I’m thinking some squash playin’, reading and cooking are in order.

I had some problems with Internet access this week so I got behind on my reading a bit. I still managed to find some great things, though.
Enjoy your weekend! Happy St. Patrick’s Day a little early! The celebration certainly calls for a little (or a lot of) Guinness!

Off Her Cork is doing a monthly special called “Feet on the Street” where she features runners around the blogging world. I’ve really been enjoying the read. In addition, Friday was her B-day so she is doing a chocolate giveaway! You only need to comment to enter and the contest ends on Sunday.

Eat Real made one of my favorite Irish dishes – Colcannon – just in time for St. Patrick’s Day.

Uncornered Market is a blog by a great couple who are traveling the world and recording their experiences for the world to see. This week they posted an amazing slide show of the foods they had in Thailand. It is some of the best looking street food I have seen!

What is Wellness? is a question that was blogged about on Intent this week. The list is deep, but sometimes I like deep. The ideas presented will really get you thinking.

And last, but not least. Don’t forget that the Great Peanut Butter Exhibition #5 ends on Sunday at noon PST. Have you entered yet? The competition is getting quite stiff. There have been some creative sandwiches invented!

Happy weekend! I hope you are enjoying it. As always, there was so much great stuff out there to read this week. It looks like many of you are enjoying the first signs of spring. It is hot here and we are really looking forward to a little sign of fall and winter (being that winter here is like a beautiful fall in the mid-southern US).

Thank you for all the wonderful comments on the Blog Reading post this week. It was so great to have everyone’s input.

Now, some healthy reading for your weekend…

Food Magazines Begin to Consider Cooks’ Budgets was an article posted at the NYTimes this week. It was an interesting read about how the more upscale food magazines are adjusting their content to meet the needs of those who have found themselves with a little less money to spend on fancy meals.

Green Gigs shared the details of 7 Green Careers from Home. This was especially interesting to me since I work from home myself.

Delicious by Nature sparked my interest with a recipe for a homemade, dairy free Coconut Vanilla Bean Ice Cream. I had never thought of using coconut milk for a base in my ice cream maker, but I will be trying this.

Diet, Dessert and Dogs posted some outstanding meal-in-a-bowl ideas, some great discussion and recipes for her sauces. Almond curry or orange fig anyone?

Food Renegade is introducing Fight Back Fridays – a blog carnival of real foods. Even if you don’t participate it is surely going to be worth it to head over and check out the recipes of those who do. The first one is March 13.

February 28, 2009

I have had a very eventful week. There was my trip back to Brazil, a week of eating great food in Curitiba and now we are celebrating my husband’s birthday. Happy Birthday to my best friend!!

I managed to keep up with some reading this week and here are some posts that I enjoyed. I hope you have a wonderful weekend!!

The Salty Cod made an outstanding King Cake for Mardi Gras. She incorporated the recipe for a Sour Cream Almond Pound Cake. Yum!

Have Cake, Will Travel gives us another way to incorporate beans into our desserts with her Chickpea Blondies.

Intent.com had a good post about the Top 10 Things to Give Up or Add for Lent. I am Catholic so this is a common practice for me. However, I feel personal sacrifice, as explained in this post, can be beneficial regardless of your spirituality or religion. Giving up things we have come to take for granted can help us to simplify our lives. Devoting time to meditation or prayer can improve our mental wellbeing and reduce stress. If you’ve give up something for Lent or simply to better yourself, I’d love to know. Leave me a comment.

Lesley posted about how to make Greek yogurt. Hooray! So glad she shared it with us. If you haven’t seen it yet, head over there and check it out.

You’ve got two more weeks to enter the Great Peanut Butter Exhibition #5. I can’t wait to see what you come up with!

I hope this weekend finds you well! I came across so many good reads this week. I was fortunate to have the time to catch up. Here are a few of my favorites. Enjoy the rest of your weekend!
Verda Vivo gave us 14 reasons why we should stop drinking soda. Such a great post and I love that she backs up her writing with scientific research. I’ve pretty much given up soda/diet soda except for the occasional set back, usually with Mexican food or pizza. This post reminded me to pass on it when I’m tempted. (This post was actually from last week, but who’s paying attention.)
Café Nilson had a tasty Artichoke Chicken Casserole recipe. I can’t wait to try it. I love the tartness of artichoke hearts, but seldom find an opportunity to incorporate them.

Eat. Drink. Better. had a post that actually made me want to go back to school. (Eeek! I swore I’d never say that!) Montana State University has an undergraduate degree program in Sustainable Food and Bioenergy Systems. The description sounds like so much fun! Where were these degrees when I was in college? Then again, I’ve gained a lot of knowledge since then. I probably wouldn’t even have known what they were.

I recently started following @Gaiam on Twitter which lead me to their blog and this week’s round up of stories. My favorite is the one about the Georgia Aquarium using Beluga whales as inspiration for yoga class. Very cool!

Great stuff out there this week. I’ve noticed there is a slight trend among food blogs towards all things chocolate. I wonder what holiday is coming up that would encourage that? I’m really looking forward to all the Valentine’s Day posts that are sure to come this week!
On to the links…
Savor the Thyme had a recipe for Almond, Flax & White Chocolate Nutella Dessert Pizza. You don’t even need to see the recipe or a picture to know that has to be amazing!
Passionate Eater had some beautiful pictures and information on where to get good eats in Zurich, Switzerland. Even if you have no plans to go there, you have see the pictures of the food! You might just book yourself a trip.
What Does Your Body Good? brings up an excellent topic this week – using rather unhealthy ways to raise funds for health-focused organizations. Stop over and tell her what you think.
Next week is Random Acts of Kindness week. How will you celebrate?

If you are looking for some new reads 100 Best Health and Nutrition Blogs for Athletes should give you plenty.

I also wanted to give a shout out regarding Twitter. I love it and it has become a substitute for office mates since I started working from home. Aside from some pretty hilarious people that make me laugh, I get great leads on posts and information.
I also like to share when I find great posts – like yours! If you are on Twitter please leave your info in the comments so I can follow you. Or, if you are so inclined you can follow me at http://twitter.com/lori1329 and I will reciprocate.
Enjoy your weekend!
