Links to a Healthy Weekend

February 21, 2009

I hope this weekend finds you well! I came across so many good reads this week. I was fortunate to have the time to catch up. Here are a few of my favorites. Enjoy the rest of your weekend!
Verda Vivo gave us 14 reasons why we should stop drinking soda. Such a great post and I love that she backs up her writing with scientific research. I’ve pretty much given up soda/diet soda except for the occasional set back, usually with Mexican food or pizza. This post reminded me to pass on it when I’m tempted. (This post was actually from last week, but who’s paying attention.)
Café Nilson had a tasty Artichoke Chicken Casserole recipe. I can’t wait to try it. I love the tartness of artichoke hearts, but seldom find an opportunity to incorporate them.

Eat. Drink. Better. had a post that actually made me want to go back to school. (Eeek! I swore I’d never say that!) Montana State University has an undergraduate degree program in Sustainable Food and Bioenergy Systems. The description sounds like so much fun! Where were these degrees when I was in college? Then again, I’ve gained a lot of knowledge since then. I probably wouldn’t even have known what they were.

I recently started following @Gaiam on Twitter which lead me to their blog and this week’s round up of stories. My favorite is the one about the Georgia Aquarium using Beluga whales as inspiration for yoga class. Very cool!

i keep on reading all this business about how soda is bad for you… but how can something that tastes so good be so bad?? 😉

i have been trying to kick the habit for awhile. i definitely don’t have it everyday, but rum & coke is my favorite drink, so on saturdays when nick and i go out to dinner, it sneaks back into my diet. alcohol makes it healthy, though, right??

Heather – I know exactly what you mean. About the only time I drink it now is in cocktails. That is a hard habit to break for me. I’ve tried to switch to plain soda water and lime with some drinks, but still like diet coke with others.

Since I’ve kicked the habit pretty well I’m finding I really don’t enjoy drinking them. They leave me feeling bloated. Believe me, I never thought I would give them up. I was hard set on the fact that they were okay for me and didn’t add calories to my diet. Since we moved to Brazil tho they are a lot less accessible (well, in the case anyway) so we don’t buy them.

I also saw cafe nilson’s recipe and am looking forward to trying it-I bought the artichokes from Trader Joe’s.

Like you and Jennifer, I’ve marked cafenilson’s recipe to make. Thanks again for your weekend links post – I always find something new that I’d otherwise miss!

    Thanks for the links!

Thanks for including my blog post about giving up soda. I was a Diet Mountain Dew soda fanatic for a while. Now that I’ve quit, I can sleep all the way through the night and feel better than ever. I prefer plain water to almost anything else – okay I still like my coffee and wine but they’re not so bad for you. Verda Vivo (aka Daryl).

Its really neat to hear about new programs colleges are offering in food and sustainable agriculture! UNH has an Eco-Gastronomy Program!

Hi Elizabeth – Thanks for your comment! That program sounds so interesting. I hadn’t heard about that one. Very cool.
