Links to a Healthy Weekend

September 20, 2009

It’s likely no surprise that the weekend has been filled with lots of cleaning out, organizing and packing for me. Today I hope to do a little cooking for the week. How about you?

I’ve been having a hard time keeping up with reading, but thanks to Twitter some great posts and articles crossed my path this week. Enjoy the rest of your weekend and happy reading!

Chai Peach Yogourt Muffins from Food Gourmand
I could have gone for one of these at breakfast this morning! These beautiful muffins combine whole wheat flour, Greek yogurt and all the spices from Chai. I will be trying them as soon as I get back to my muffin pan!
Bacon Salted Caramel Pecan Bars from Savory Sweet Life
You know how on occasion you stumble upon these popular blogs with awesome recipes having no idea why it took you so long to find them. Well this blog is one of those for me. These bars are going on my holiday baking list. Considering I have many unadventurous eaters in my life, I’m not telling any of them there is bacon in there until they taste it!
Creamy Homemade Nut Milk from Sense and Serendipity
I’d honestly never thought about making my own nut milk. Here’s a step by step guide and it really doesn’t look that difficult. I especially like the tips for how to use up the pulp considering nuts aren’t the most affordable ingredient around.
Nofu to Tofu from Making Love in the Kitchen
If you haven’t noticed yet, soy was a really hot topic on many nourishing and natural food blogs this week. I especially enjoyed this post and the recipe. I’ve been researching the topic to do a post of my own for a while now (one of those things on the list I just haven’t gotten to), and found much of the same health information, so definitely check it out.
Ice cream and burgers can control your brain: study from Reuters
Some really interesting information about how fats from certain foods can reduce our ability to listen to those helpful hormones which tell us when we are full.

I hope you are enjoying a lovely summer (or winter) weekend wherever you may be. Happy Father’s Day to any dads out there and if you have the fortunate opportunity to be near yours this weekend enjoy every second of it. I hear the garden is going wild back home – green beans, potatoes, peas, squash, raspberries and blackberries – so I’m sure my dad will be spending his weekend outside.
There was a lot of great reading (and watching) out there about real, nourishing foods. It was one of those weeks that I really felt inspired and confident that as a healthy society, we are making changes in the right direction.
I feel I should give a shout out to Food Renegade and Find Your Balance today because they always give me such great links through Twitter. A couple of today’s links I found through their informative re-tweets.
Campaign for Real Health spills the butter in the post Fat 3.0. This will then lead you to an article in Ode Magazine all about how fat is back in the limelight regarding health and this time it has nothing to do with cutting it out.
Agave: A Triumph of Marketing over Truth from Mercola.com shares more information about the agave craze and whether or not it is better, or no better, for you than sugar. I found this to be very informative and went along with much of the information I found when I was researching for my post.
Beware of hypes. Açaí as an example. from the Juice Herald takes on a similar theme. Why, oh why must we, in the US, always turn healthy, real foods into miracle cures, pills and extracts?

Taco Calzones with Avocado Cream was shared by food for living. I was so happy to find the Homemade Taco Seasoning Blend at the end of the post. I want to get away from using the packets, but I’m never quite sure what to put together to add the right flavor. Now I’ve got it.

Make your life more like travel by Gadling was an inspiring post I think most of us can relate to. It definitely gives you something to think about regarding enjoying where you are, positive attitude and everyday life.

thanks for all the links! they look great.

Oh I saw that agave article! good transition food, i think, to wean off white sugar but def not health food! Can’t wait to check out the fats article…that’s my new favorite subject.

Great links! I’m especially interested in the Agave one. Have a healthy weekend!

Great links! I like the fat and acai ones. I’ve heard about how acai is more hype than anything. I’m also glad that I got off the low-fat bandwagon. It’s very restrictive.

Thanks for the links! I’m curious about what Juice Herald says about açai. Isn’t it ironic that we have some of (if not THE) highest obesity rates in the world but we’re rather obsessed about health food, especially if it allows us to eat the stuff we should be cutting back. A miracle cure is so much easier than the hard work of watching what one eats and exercising.

Most weeks tend to go fast for me, but this one went incredibly fast for some reason. I’m still trying focus on Friday and it is already Saturday. Here is a little of what I enjoyed reading this week.

There is all kinds of talk about fall food around web – apples, pumpkins, sweet taters. Given my recent interest in the latter, these Turkish Sweet Potato & Apricot Rolls from Eating Out Loud look incredible. A new way to enjoy what is often just a holiday favorite.

I found this post about coconut oil on the Nourishing Gourmet and I was amazed, to say the least. I’ve always been leery of the amount of saturated fat in coconut products, even though I love them. There is some really thought provoking information provided regarding its health benefits and I’m planning to follow up with some research of my own this weekend.

Back in Skinny Jeans provided some info on what worked for her when it came to breaking free of the diet soda death grip.

Looking forward to reading about your research on coconut!

I can’t wait to try them. I need to get going on the coconut oil research as well.
