Guess what? I missed Halloween! I can’t believe it!

Our local news said that our town would be celebrating on the 31st while some surrounding towns would celebrate on the 30th and even the 29th.

Do your cities do this? The first time I experienced this whole choose-your-Halloween was when we came to Kentucky. It annoys me a bit. I miss the good ol’ days when Halloween was the 31st no matter what day of the week it fell on.

Anyway, my husband went to a football game out of town over the weekend with plans to be back Sunday so we could hand out candy and show off the pug. That is Macy above. She decided to be a candy corn this year in honor of her favorite toy.

I was in the middle of doing yoga when I started hearing voices outside. I looked out and saw a few kids dressed up. Thinking that perhaps someone in the neighborhood was having a party and they were headed there, I didn’t pay much attention.

Then as the night went on I realized that there were kids out trick-or-treating! No one was coming to our house because no lights were on and by the time I realized they were actually out to get candy the specified 6 to 8pm time frame was almost over.

This whole time frame thing gets me too. I remember trick-or-treating well into the night. That was the fun of it!

So now, I sit here on actual Halloween with no celebrations, a pug with no one to see her costume and candy. Fortunately I didn’t buy a lot because our neighborhood isn’t that big living out in the country a bit.

    Oh well, maybe next year.

Maybe you can let me know what exciting things you did for the holiday to ease the disappointment.

I’d never heard of that ‘choose your Hallowe’en’ idea – seems a little sad somehow. Over here, it’s always the 31st, and no time limits on kiddie callers either. Hope some arrive soon – we have the sweeties at the ready 🙂

You doggie looks too cute for words!

  • megan @ whatmegansmaking October 31, 2010 at 6:10 pm

That dog is adorable! I love the costume!

  • Fresh Local and Best October 31, 2010 at 6:35 pm

I would also prefer to have Halloween on the 31st like it always is. Who makes those rules anyway?

    That’s a cute candy costume!

  • Anna October 31, 2010 at 8:32 pm

Awwww, the dog looks adorable, I’m a bit bummed too, I went out today (31st) all exited with my camera ready to snap pictures of cute kids with costumes and all. And guess what???? There was not a soul outside. What a heck? It’s my first halloween in LA and I lost it too. Boooooo!

  • Debinhawaii October 31, 2010 at 8:47 pm

That is crazy–I never heard you could pick a day either. Macy is the cutest little candy corn! 😉 I haven’t seen a trick or treater yet tonight but it is still early here.

What is with all the Hallowe’en rules? I’ve never been anywhere that doesn’t celebrate on the 31st. And specified trick or treating times? So bizarre!

  • Joanne November 1, 2010 at 4:36 am

I’m so sorry you missed Halloween! I’ve never heard of this choose-your-own-day either. We always just celebrated it on October 31st, no matter what day of the week it was. If it makes you feel any better…I spent the day studying. Not cool.

And I do definitely want to take part in the cookie recipe exchange!

I’m so glad you got to share Macy with us. I love to costume. What a cutie.

Happy belated Halloween. We had the revelers roam our streets, but they were mostly of the older persuasion and its not nearly as fun. I love seeing the kids get all excited.

I am sorry you missed your Halloween. I’ve spent mine at home with hubby watching a movie. Your dog looks so cute.

  • MelindaRD November 1, 2010 at 10:07 am

Oh no, but the dog is so cute. I have heard of towns doing this. Some places I know did this because of the night it was on, so a Sunday means harder to get kids ready for Monday, and in other places, on Friday nights they have switched to eliminate possible “trouble” from adults out partying and getting wild. Locally here there is All Saints Day and I have seen a few kids out getting candy.

  • kat November 1, 2010 at 2:55 pm

Macy looks so cute! I hate that whole different towns have different days thing, its just a way for kids to get candy from more than one place in my opinion

  • Sagan November 1, 2010 at 4:23 pm

Aw sorry you missed it! Having Halloween on any day other than the 31st is just plain weird. I had no idea they did things that way! So strange.

If it’s any consolation, all I did for Halloween was visit with my 2-year-old cousins for an hour, cooing over their cute little costumes.

…I spent so many years making a huge deal out of holidays that this year, I’m all burned out! Not getting “into” the holidays much at all.

  • Reeni November 1, 2010 at 5:59 pm

What a cutie! That is a bummer – times sure have changed. I only had 5 kids come to my door and one of them wasn’t dressed up and none of them said ‘trick or treat’!

There are no jack-o-lanterns, candy corn or trick-or-treaters to be found where I am at, but that doesn’t mean I’m not celebrating! Halloween is the time when treats come to mind so I’d thought I’d share one of my favorites with you today.

When fall gets into full swing (or it seems more like winter from what I hear) I always start craving my Mom’s Caramel Corn. She has perfected the art of making it and it is often the go-to food gift when someone has something to celebrate in our circle of family and friends.

The best part is that it is so easy. You’ll need a little time to be around the house because it is in the oven for about an hour, but you can use that time to catch up on your food blog reading or do a few crunches in anticipation of the tasty treat.

Before I go on with the recipe let me share the 3 reasons why yours won’t look like mine (and why mine doesn’t look like my Mom’s). Brown sugar, corn syrup and a really hot oven!

The brown sugar in Brazil is heavy on the molasses with a much different flavor and consistency than that found in the States. The only corn syrup here isn’t quite as sweet and it is a light amber color, not clear. Finally, my oven only goes down to about 360 degrees F and the recipe calls for a 200 degree F oven.

All these factors lead to mine being quite a bit darker. It still tasted great, just a little different. I’ll make some when I’m in the States for the holidays and post some more pictures then.

Speaking of the holidays, last year I made this recipe, mixed some nuts in and then drizzled it with dark and white chocolate after it cooled. It made great Christmas gifts for friends and neighbors.

    Caramel Corn

    ½ stick butter
    ½ cup brown sugar
    ½ cup light corn syrup
    ½ tsp baking soda
    1 tsp vanilla
4 quart pot of popcorn (about 1 cup unpopped)

In a saucepan, melt butter, brown sugar and corn syrup, stirring often. Once completely melted add baking soda and vanilla. Stir until combined and fluffy.

Pour the mixture over popcorn and stir to coat well. Dump caramel corn onto a cookie sheet and spread evenly. Bake at 200 degrees F for 1 hour, stirring every 15 minutes. Cool on wax paper or foil. Once cool, break apart and enjoy!

Since I don’t have much going on for Halloween you have to tell me what you are doing today. Have a fun weekend with or without a Halloween celebration!

What a fun recipe! Unfortunately we didn’t really get our stuff together for today! I am running to the store after work to get candy because I have no idea if we will get any kids?

  • laura October 31, 2008 at 6:36 am

Yum. Caramel is my favorite kind of popcorn. We used to make it in a paper bag, but I can’t imagine it didn’t require an oven at all. Hmmm…time to go recipe hunting.

love caramel corn! we always get Fisher’s Popcorn (caramel corn) down at the beach during the summers. It always goes fast!

  • editor October 31, 2008 at 11:35 am

That looks delicious. I am just afraid I would eat it all up, all by myself.

  • Lori October 31, 2008 at 1:01 pm

Thanks for the comments everyone! I hope you have a great holiday!

laura – my mom used to make it in a big paper bag too. I think she used that for a microwave version.

editor – thanks for stopping by. Yes, that is a huge problem. Ha, ha!

  • Jul November 2, 2008 at 4:38 pm

Yum! Now I totally want some caramel corn. Possibly enough to attempt to make some. No idea if I can buy corn syrup in Germany…

  • Lori November 3, 2008 at 9:38 am

Jul – Here they have a glucose syrup. It is the same consistency and works the same way, but has a less sweet flavor and darker color.
