Fake Food Free Is Now a Substack Newsletter

July 1, 2023

Come join me at a new table.

I took a long break from posting here, but to be honest with you, I started to miss it. But what I missed most was connecting with you, sharing stories, and a recipe here and there.

So I’m happy to say that Fake Food Free has transitioned to the Substack Newsletter called Every Corner of the World.

I hope to see you there.

What you can expect:

Inviting reads on food culture and travel based on firsthand experiences.

Approachable recipes inspired by farmers’ market visits and culinary exploration.

A peak inside my obsession with all types of foods and varieties of produce.

A look at my corner of the food industry and what it’s like to stay small working as a one-person show to produce content for agriculture boards, brands, and magazines.

Fun notes about what it’s like to write and photograph your third cookbook with a publishing house.

Pomegranate Jalapeno Margaritas

December 27, 2019

This recipe for pomegranate pickled pepper margaritas with jalepenos, gold tequila, and triple sec provides a twist on a traditional margarita with a kick.

Pomegranate Pickled Pepper Margaritas | FakeFoodFree.com #cocktailrecipes #cocktailideas #tequila #margaritas

I had to get one more recipe posted before the end of the year! What better way to close out the year than with a cocktail?

And not just any cocktail, but one that pretty much represents what this year has been.

Sweet, salty, tangy, vibrant, dark, rich, happy, and thoughtful. A jalapeno margarita with pomegranate!

Are there any other words that can encompass every feeling and experience all rolled into one?

That’s the kind of year it’s been. So let’s drink to that!

Mission Fig, Bacon and Cheddar Flammkuchen with Thyme

December 9, 2019
Fig Bacon Cheddar Flammkuchen Recipe

Full disclosure. This is not a traditional flammkuchen.

If your next question is – what is a flammkuchen? – let me introduce you to one of my favorite meals to eat while wandering the stalls of festive Christmas Markets in Germany.

It’s a flatbread topped with bacon, onions, and creme fraiche. We’ve had so many versions during our trips to Europe. Sometimes there are other topping options. We had a vegetarian version once.

The crusts also vary. Some are cracker-thin, others thick and chewy. If you check out that post I linked to above, you’ll find a few versions from our visit to Berlin a few years ago.

My favorite crust is thin and slightly chewy. I’m such a fan that I created a more traditional version for my new cookbook, Beer Bread. It’s out in February!

Until then, you can enjoy this fun variation I came up with recently.

Twelve Thanksgiving Side Dishes

November 15, 2019

My goal every year is to get creative with my Thanksgiving side dishes. I love traditions and classics, but if we never introduce anything new, we’ll never create any new traditions or classics. At least that is the way I look at it.

So at least one new thing is always my goal.

Loaded Peanut Butter Powder Granola

November 8, 2019

I was so happy when peanut butter powder finally hit the market! It’s gotten popular the past year or so, and I love being able to find it just about anywhere. I first experienced it as peanut flour, which is essentially what it is, sometimes with salt added. (And sometimes sugar, but I avoid the added sugar version.)

I’ve started stirring it into my homemade granola and the results are excellent!

Beer Bread Cookbook

Beer Bread Cookbook by Lori Rice | Brew-infused breads, rolls, biscuits, muffins, and more! #cookbooks #cookingwithbeer #bakingwithbeer #breadrecipes

I can’t believe it’s been 8 months since I hit send on the manuscript.

Writing a cookbook puts you in a strange timewarp where you feel like it was just yesterday, yet forever ago at the same time. I’m not even sure how that is possible! But that is how it feels.

My cookbook, Beer Bread:  Brew-Infused Breads, Rolls, Biscuits, Muffins and More, is officially available for pre-order!

It hits shelves February 4, 2020!

There are so many reasons why I love this book. I mean, I love writing and photographing my own cookbooks, but this one is special. It’s an idea I had on the backburner for years. Even before Food on Tap!

Crispy Prosciutto Spinach Salad with Spicy Maple Dressing

October 18, 2019

You will love this spinach salad. It’s one of those twists on a classic that is easy to make, but, in my opinion, full of much more flavor.

I stumbled on it by accident one day when I was needing to a quick lunch and there was prosciutto leftover from another recipe that needed to be used up. We tend to buy the mega-bags or boxes of spinach from Costco so there is always spinach in the house. Always.

Easy Sauteed Greens Recipe with Parmesan and Everything seasoning | FakeFoodFree.com #healthyeating #healthyrecipes #easyrecipes #easysidedish #leafygreens

I have a quick one for you this time around. I threw these easy sauteed greens together just a few weeks ago and it has been my go-to side ever since. I’ve been eating it with veggie burgers at dinner and with eggs for breakfast.

It’s a super simple combination of leafy greens with a few toppers to enhance the flavors and make them more delicious.

Shishito Pepper Board with Cilantro Crema and Tequila Honey

August 30, 2019
Shishito Pepper Board with Cilantro Crema and Tequila Honey | FakeFoodFree.com #appetizers #partyfood #partyideas #charcuterieboard #starters

Truth: I’ve had this idea for a shishito pepper board on my mind all summer. I love these peppers.

I’ve grown a plant for two years in a row and I get one pepper at a time over the course of several weeks. Not worth it. So I always end up buying a bag a Trader Joe’s when I have the opportunity.

I love sauteing them in oil with smoked sea salt, but I’ve always felt like they could be taken a step forward. This appetizer board is that step forward.

Twelve Soup Recipes for Soup Season

12 Soup Recipes for Soup Season | FakeFoodFree.com #souprecipes #soups #stilllife #bowls #foodphotography

Soup season is almost upon us! Chances are it will be upon you much sooner than it is upon me. It stays hot here in California’s Central Valley through October. But I try not to think about it.

The point is I want you to be prepared. I’ve made a lot of soup recipes over the years. So many that I thought I’d pull some of my favorites together so that you can easily access them.
