Blackberry Banana Frozen Yogurt | Fake Food Free

I’m working on my added-sugar dependency. I don’t think I eat an exceptional amount, but when you consider that just about everything we eat has sugar in it, in one form or another – yeah, maybe I eat too much.

I cut sugar out of my coffee a couple years ago, and fortunately I haven’t gone back. My oatmeal, however, is a different story. I like honey and maple syrup. Not bad at all in my opinion, but worth reducing.

My main goal is to stop turning to sugar out of habit. This doesn’t mean that I don’t want something sweet. I also happen to disagree that cravings completely go away. Lessen yes, but go away, no; at least not for me, based on several experiments.

So added sugars are out, but fruit is still in.

I solved the problem with my oatmeal. I find a half smashed banana and blueberries or strawberries stirred in to be the sweet enough for me to enjoy. And by enjoy I mean I’ve had it every morning this week for breakfast.

With a big container of plain Greek yogurt in the fridge, I decided to try a no-sugar-added snack. I love the original or tart flavor at yogurt shops. Sadly, almost all the stores in central Kentucky have removed it because it isn’t popular. That leaves me to make it myself.

I still have blackberries in the freezer, and decided to sweeten the yogurt with banana once again. The blackberries I use can be tart, very similar to yogurt, so if you want to go a little sweeter I’d suggest something like blueberries and maybe another half of banana, but for me, this was the perfect treat.

Homemade Blackberry Frozen Yogurt Recipe with no added sugar | Fake Food Free

Blackberry Banana Frozen Yogurt

Makes: 3 to 4 servings

Ingredients

1 1/2 cups frozen blackberries, thawed (with liquid)
1 1/4 cup whole or 2% plain Greek yogurt
1 banana

Preparation

Place all ingredients in a blender and pulse until smooth. It essentially becomes a smoothie. Turn on your counter top ice cream maker and pour the mixture into the freezer bowl. Run until the yogurt is frozen, about 20 minutes.

Getting the right texture is tricky. I put it in the freezer to set up a little more and after an hour, it had gone way too far. I would suggestion eating it straight out of the ice cream maker, or allow it to set up for about 30 minutes, watching it closely.

I’ve cut out sugar in my coffee too. But I eat a lot of fruits and fresh juices so I’m not completely off it. Plus anytime you eat out you know you can’t help it. I feel goo though that I don’t add any extra to my daily routine.

Wow! It’s ice cream season indeed. Your frozen yogurt looks so delicious. Gorgeous photos!

Rebecca – Thanks! I’m a huge maple syrup fan too.

Anoyn – I’m the same way. When I can control it I do which makes me feel better. It’s nice not to be so reliant on it, healthier too.

DD – Thanks! Maybe I’ll speed up the process of getting full blown ice cream season here with posts like these. 🙂

Mmmm! Looks wonderful. I’ll save your recipe and try it soon. I’m thinking next weekend would be perfect. I’ve been trying to cut out some of my white sugar intake, and made myself some pomegranate molasses to put into oatmeal. I juiced out pomegranates, added a little touch of honey and lemon juice, then boiled it down to about 1/4. I keep it in the fridge, and add a small spoonful to my yogurt and granola in the morning. It’s yummy, and I like to think much better for me than just spooning on the white sugar.
Thanks for the recipe, I’m looking forward to trying it out.

One thing I need to work on, is to reduce my intake of sugar too!
I made something similar to this before, except w/o the banana. The berries were frozen and you blend the berries and yogurt together. Leave it in the fridge for an hr or two (mixing it every 30 minutes) and it was fantastic!
I’d love to try your version. Great photography by the way!

Um… wow. This looks great! I have made something similar with greek yogurt, but I never got the ratios quite right. I will definitely try this!

We try to watch the sneaky sugar intake, and I’ve found that adding cinnamon and other spices to my oatmeal tricks us into thinking its sweeter than it is, plus raisins, dates and apples.

    Love the frozen yogurt!

Like the flavor of this frozen yogurt…especially that we always have bananas around.

Delicious!! Would like to try it…is there any way I can make this without an icecream maker?

  • Lori March 8, 2012 at 4:01 pm

Glad to hear I’m not alone in my battle against too much sugar. 🙂

Rosh – You could try freezing it and then stirring it at regular intervals. I’ve done that once before with another ice cream. You’d just have to give it a try and see if it works.
