Links to a Healthy Weekend

July 31, 2010

Our first cantaloupe says good morning! Isn’t it just the cutest thing? I’m going to try to take pictures of it along the way to show you the progression. Yes, I realize I am easily amused.

Macy doesn’t seem to care too much for the winter squash or cantaloupes. She routinely walks right over them, crushing blooms and kicking vines. I think it may be because I tend to give them more attention when we are outside than I give to her.

It has been a great last week of July and I’m finally back with some links again. The final manuscript of the book is due Monday so you know what I’m up to this weekend. Also, my success with canning seems to be improving. I made peach jam from the peaches I got when my nephew and I went to a local orchard last week. I’ll tell you more about that outstanding place next week.

And yes, I realize jam is about the easiest thing you can prepare and can, but that doesn’t make me any less proud. Small steps.

I hope you enjoy some of the more inspiring and informative articles and posts I came across the past couple weeks. Have a happy and healthy weekend!

Ale and Pretzel Soft Caramels from Sprinkle Bakes is the first post of the year that is officially going on my holiday baking list. These things look incredible!

Jules’ 4-Grain Salad from Happy Little Vegans just might be the most beautiful salad I’ve seen. It combines red quinoa, wheat berries, black wild rice and barley all stacked into a delicious little tower.

Biscoff Cookies from Cupcake Project shares the recipe so that you don’t have to get on a plane to enjoy those spicy, little cookies. I have to admit they are always my pick when traveling by air. Considering how low my air time has been lately I think I should start making my own.

Strangest State Fair Food from Travel + Leisure shows the most creative selections from around the country. There are a couple that turn even me off, but I have to admit that I’m intrigued by the Pork Parfait and Emu Tacos.

Are vertical farms the future of urban food? on the Guardian Environment Network will have you thinking about farming in a whole new way.

I am so excited for your garden, I love seeing these fruits and veggies emerge in your garden, it makes up for my not having one. I can’t wait to see how it progresses.

I’d be excited to see a baby cantaloupe in my own garden as well 🙂

I am definitely impressed with your jam. It’s something I haven’t yet attempted but really want to!

    Your cantaloupe is so cute!

Cute, cute cantaloupe! And nice links! I’m especially eager to read the one about vertical farming. Our town is about to build a vertical community garden on the side of its parking garage. Very, very cool, and I can’t wait for the project to be completed.

The little biscoffs look SO cute!! As does your cantaloupe. So cool that you are growing them for yourself.

I really want to try making my own jam sometime.

Oh Lori, love the idea of
“collecting” fruit and vegetables in the garden 🙂
The “baby” cantaloupe is SO cute!

    I want a baby cantaloupe!!

  • Velva August 2, 2010 at 6:23 pm

Lori, cheers to your canning peach jam. I have yet to embark on the adventure. I have all kinds of romantic ideas as to how i can learn to can but, have yet to try.

    Love the little cantaloupe!!

Thanks for sharing. I hope your deadline for the manuscript went well.

  • Michelle @ Find Your Balance August 3, 2010 at 6:36 am

I’ve yet to can a darn thing, so I’m impressed with your jam for sure!

  • Lori August 5, 2010 at 4:30 am

Thanks everyone! The cantaloupe is growing so fast. I’ll have new pics soon. Jam making is so easy, so if you want to feel successful at your first canning experience, start with jam. 😉

    January 31, 2009

Happy Saturday and happy last day of January! It’s been an incredibly fast month for me.
What are your healthy plans this weekend? I’m going to play some Squash with my husband today and get in a run on Sunday. Sunday night we are going to settle in to watch the big game. (The Puppy Bowl is already scheduled on TiVo) We are 4 hours ahead of the east coast right now, so it is going to be a late night.
There was so much great reading out there this weekend.
Hope you enjoy the links this week!
Feed Between the Lines had a post on Breaking Down Barriers. It is a great step by step plan to getting past those obstacles that stand between us and our health goals.
Lighter Footstep shared some information about green Super Bowl parties.
Cinnamon Spice & Everything Nice had a wonderful recipe for fruit pizza. I was especially intrigued by the addition of anise and orange peel to the crust. Yum! This looks like a tasty, and rather healthy, addition to your party spread.
Nomadic Matt’s Travel Site posted about the Secret to Long Term Traveling. Even if you don’t like to travel you have to read the 2nd to last paragraph about mini-retirements. It makes you think and is a philosophy I believe in. We shouldn’t waste our healthiest days missing out on what we enjoy.

Thank you for including me in your links! Have a wonderful weekend….I love the puppy bowl too:)

  • Tangled Noodle January 31, 2009 at 11:09 am

Great links – I saw CSEN’s fruit pizza, too and thought: another use for jackfruit?

  • Lori January 31, 2009 at 11:40 am

Erica – It’s been great so far. Hope yours is going well!

VeggieGirl – I thought the fruit pizza looked very tasty.

Daily Spud – Hope you were able to get your walk in! The rain skipped us today. Sunny again. 🙂

Caitlin – Your welcome! I really enjoyed the post. I can’t wait to see all the pups!

TN – Oh, good thinking! That would be really good. I wonder if it would be better on top or somehow incorporated into the sauce?

They had some at the feira this week that I was tempted to get they were actually a little smaller. If I hadn’t had other things on my list to carry back I might have taken the plunge. The Brazilians tell me it is nearly impossible to get the gluey stuff of your hands!
