Happy Saturday! Don’t you just love this time of year? There are so many things going on, you just can’t help but be excited – farmer’s markets, grilling, ripening strawberries and festivals! Speaking of festivals I’m headed to a wine fest here today if the weather cooperates. I’m not sure how much tasting I’ll do in the middle of a hot afternoon, but I hear there is supposed to be some good food. I’ll let you know.

Don’t Be Late, Take Your Time by Eating Asia featured banh canh cua with a few tips on how to get your hands on some in Vietnam. I never tire of reading posts with all those incredible Asian noodles and condiments.

Purple tomatoes? If you like your veggies in a variety of colors you will enjoy this short feature about a hybrid tomato from Oregon State University.

Spinach Crust Quiche with Smoked Cheddar from My McDonald Meal caught my attention this week. Not only do I love smoked cheddar, but veggies in the crust goes way beyond my expectations. It looks great!

U.S. schools add fresh foods without busting budgets from Reuters highlights the great things schools are doing to improve nutrition and food quality. I was thrilled to see Jefferson County, KY schools mentioned. While Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution brought school food to a national light, the truth is, a lot of schools were making changes long ago, and not just on the coasts! Kentucky had great things going on prior to our move abroad and I’m sure other states are similar.

How to Begin Trail Running is a short video of an inspirational new mom who began running to take off the baby weight. If you need some motivation, take a look. I’m excited to be running my first trail race in June!

    Thanks so much for adding my quiche recipe! Isn’t smoked cheddar the best? This was Tillamook White Smoked Cheddar. We used to eat it a lot in Oregon but hadn’t seen it here until recently.

    Their back! Sorry I had to skip out last weekend. The week before didn’t leave me much time for reading so there wasn’t much to go on for a links post. I returned to some fun and informative info this week, though.
    Don’t you just love the bananas! I took the photo while my husband and I were out and about last weekend. When we decided to make a camera upgrade my main motivation was so that I could capture some photos of fruits and vegetables while we were still here. I know bananas aren’t all that exotic to most, but I love seeing them growing on the tree!
    Enjoy your weekend and do something healthy for yourself! I’m taking a break the beginning of next week, but will be back soon enough with what I’m hoping will be lots of fun food photos!

    Don’t (White) Sugar-Coat It had a post about a recent visit to the farmer’s market which featured a Brazilian vegetable that I haven’t had yet. The Maxixe is a small cucumber with a lemon flavor. I have seen this name before (although I think it may have been spelled differently), but haven’t branched out to purchase some. Just the other day I read about the lemon cucumber and had no idea that it might be the same thing. They are going in my bag if I can find them again!

    La Fuji Mama did a review of Palm Leaf Plates. I’ve never seen these before, but they look like a fun and eco-friendly alternative to paper plates. Of course, they are a bit pricey, but you can compost them!
    Our Best Bites featured Grilled Stuffed Zucchini. I’ve done stuffed zucchini before, but would never have thought to incorporate the use of a grill! Turkey sausage was also used and I’m sure that would add such great flavor.
    Selby’s Food Corner shared a post about Putu Bambu, an Indonesian dessert of rice flour, cane sugar and coconut steamed in bamboo. This especially sparked my interest since I’m headed to Indonesia in October. I can’t wait to try it!

    Haven’t seen a banana plant in a long time!! In India we make use of every part of the plant-the fruit(but,of course),the flower(in a dry curry),the shoot/inner bark(in a salad), and the leafs(as a plate)!!

    great links lori….those palm leaf plates are so good…we need ecofriendly things to use…..
    the stuffed zuchini n the lemon cucumbers …i saw them all.
    the bamboo putu from indonesia has an indian variant too…..have tasted an asamese version n a bengali version here…….it’s light , fluffy n here they serve it with palm molasses..or date molasses…

    good info and great resources! When we were in Sinapore, at the Indian restaurants we used banana leaves as plates and it was very eco friendly and fun!

    Fun post, Lori! Thanks for the links. I’ve seen that “this is why you’re fat” site and it was outrageous! Those foods look like heart attacks and diabetes all in one (although some of it did look quite yummy).

    Selby’s Putu Bambu reminded me of a very similar Filipino dessert called puto bumbong (only just a bit different). Now I’ve got such a craving! And that maxixe sounds great – a lemony cuke? That must taste delicious!
