A Trip to Ireland in Food

March 17, 2010
I’m ashamed to say that this year I have let St. Patrick’s Day arrive with no food celebration in my kitchen. It seemed everything I wanted to make was an Irish-inspired dessert, and well, I thought it best to wait to fill the house with sweets until after Easter.
I haven’t completely forgotten the day, though. I have my Guinness shirt on and made sure my husband was wearing green before he left the house this morning.
Since I have no recipe to offer today I thought I’d turn to my backup – travel.
My first trip to Ireland was in 2007 and then I had the opportunity to go again in 2008. Unfortunately I skipped 2009 to take our month long tour around SE Asia last October. With the new house chances I’ll make it in 2010 are slim, but I have decided that I’ll get there in 2011 even if I have to swim myself! As you can image by this point withdrawal symptoms from the lack of fresh Guinness, Irish coffees, brown bread and fruit scones are almost unbearable.
In honor of St. Patrick’s Day I decided to sort through my photos and take you on a food tour of trips to the country. If you have ever been to Dublin then you know that this tour will include much more than traditional Irish food. In fact, the traditional stuff can sometimes be hard to come by in such an international city.
So here you have my Ireland through food.

Fish & Chips from Leo Burdocks

My first real Shepherd’s Pie from Bruxelles in Dublin

Hoisin Duck Wrap from Bewley’s Graffton Street Cafe

Sweet Potato Coconut Soup with Brown Bread at the GastroPub in Dun Laoghaire

Chicken & Pancetta Open-faced Sandwich from Harry’s Cafe Bar in Dun Laoghaire

Thai Vegetable Yellow Curry from Cafe Mao in Dun Laoghaire

Irish Fruit Scone, Clotted Cream, Jam & a Latte from Poppies in Dun Laoghaire

Weekend Farmer’s Market in Dun Laoghaire

Thai Prawn and Cod Cake & Chips for Beshoff Bros in Howth

Mussels, Clams & Cockles and Crayfish Pizza from Deep in Howth

Bailey’s Irish Cream ice cream from Maud’s in Howth

Drinks of Choice – Guinness, Bulmer’s Cider and Irish Coffee

 And what a great diversity in food as well! Awesome pictures Lori and a great look at what Ireland has to offer for those that haven’t been. *coughmecough*

From the states, what is the flying time to get to Ireland?

I have always wanted to get over to Ireland. I have family in Galway who I haven’t visited! This just makes me want to go even more! Hopefully Andy and I will get to go in 2011 as well.

This just makes me want to run up the road to Burdock’s and come home with more fish and chips than I could possibly eat!

Love all the pictures – great food memories to be shared. Now I ‘m graving a good batch of fish and chops. Lucky for me there’s an authentic Irish bakery less than a block a way – I know I’ll be snagging some scones at a minimum later on.

Andrea – From Chicago or Cincy it would be about 6 hours. Not bad at all. But this is coming from someone used to the 9-11 (or 26-30 total) to Brazil. The jet lag gets you a bit more going to Europe though.

Amanda – How great to go visit family and get the inside scoop. We are hoping to explore more of Ireland including the north when we go. Typically we see a few places and then more of Europe. There is so much left in Ireland we don’t know about.

Daily Spud – I had to post that one given our Twitter convo the other day. When you get yours could you overnight me some? 🙂

OysterCulture – I wish so much I could find a place in the States that was anything like what I’ve had in Ireland. We have a couple pubs around here, but they just can’t seem to make it as good as the original.

I’ve heard the food scene in Ireland is really on the upswing & there are many amazing young chefs. We thought about going this fall but I think Amsterdam & Belgium have won out.

Its been too long since I’ve had some Guiness at least 12 hours.

    Thank for the reminder!

OK, it’ after 9:00 here and you have me craving fish and chips, shepherd’s pie and all the other yummy food in your pictures. Happy St. Patrick’s Day!

kat – I’m so excited for your trip this fall. Belgium is high on our list. The choice is alway so difficult. Once we go to a place we struggle with going someplace new or returning to enjoy it more. The reason Ireland has been so convenient for us is that my husband goes every year for a work program he’s involved in.

Emily – Hope you had a great meal!

Joy and natural selection – Thanks!

Deb – A fish & chips craving can hit any time of day for me. Ha, ha!

Oh, I so want to go back! We went in ’07, well before I started food blogging so I didn’t take any photos. 😎 But the memories are vivid enough and this visual tour of your Eire adventures bring them all back. Thanks for sharing!
